I believe a Design Technology department should reflect the design capabilities it wants to teach it's pupils. There is nothing worse then seeing Design Technology resources that have not considered the layout and graphical principals that we consistently tell our pupils to use. If you want resources that set the benchmark for layout and design consideration then look no further.

Designed for Distance Learning this project follows a full design process inspired by that of the GCSE specification. Pupils research, design, create and evaluate and get to make a high end product even in the confinements of their home. All resources are ready to go straight onto Google Classroom with little instruction.
This is a great project and I have adapted it to suit my children who are younger at home. I have loaded the editable files so that you can change, add or personalise as needed. Please note that I do not take owner ship for the images that I have used throughout this project.
There is a clear timeline that is explained to pupils throughout the project and the templated work booklet will help pupils stretch to their full potential. I Look forward to seeing hundreds of variations of passives speakers that are made from recycled materials. Let you pupils be creative and innovative with things that they can find.

This booklet acts as a scheme of work that is aimed to introduce pupils to basic metal working as well as working within a linear design process. We encourage that you use iteration in the designing stage of this alongside cardboard models to ensure that you are meeting the expectations of the GCSE exams board. I have taught this project to good results and making something that is of a professional standard. Ideal for any career insight into industrial process as well as understanding the way in which metals can be used to create a desirable product. For this project to be run successfuly you will need:
Pewter
Tadel
Steel saucepan
Bunsen burner with tripod/hob
Sheet wood i.e laser ply or MDF
2D Design on computers accessible for the each pupil.
There are kits available from many craft shops but i found that i could use a lot of the things that we already had available in the department. The pewter is suitable for being melted down many times over so waste is minimal. Once bought and you would like a editable version of this resource please contact me once you have paid for the resource.
Home learning and distance learning are difficult for practical subjects but with these 4 research, design and make tasks that can be completed with materials and tools found around the house, your pupils will be able to continue the learning that is required for them to succeed in all aspects of Design and Technology. From year 7-11 and easily modified for smaller ones.
I have used these resources with great success and the outcomes always amaze me. Pupils gain a bigger understanding of the world around them and how Design and Technology can improve the life of others or just put a smile on your face.
Each scheme of learning is designed to be put onto an e-learning platform such as Google Classroom with as little instruction as possible. Encouraging an independent learning style from your pupils to create professional level products.
A stand alone lesson covering the three main types of typography. Classroom activities, expectations and videos all embedded. A lesson that has been enjoyed by all years whether learning content for the first time or revision for GCSE exams. Attached is a work sheet that complements the work set. I have used this for cover work and instructions are provided on the sheet that allow for cover supervisors to follow with minimal planning. A great resource and an enjoyable lesson to teach
Designed as an introductory scheme of learning to CAD/CAM and laser cutting pupils, this 6 hour scheme of learning has everything you need to design and make a professional quality clock. Pupils will be able to independently use Techsoft 2D desgin to create tool path that can be used to laser cut a clock. Using Quartz clock mechanisms pupils will then learn how to write an advert and retail their clocks to a target audience. With all handouts, instructions and step-by-step guidance to ensure success and progress in all pupils this unit of work has been designed to be delivered within a single term. Editable files available upon request. I have taught this project numerous times to great success and pupils enjoy the design process
Lesson 1 - Automation
Lesson 2 - Laser Cutting
Lesson 3 - Design Tutorial
Lesson 4 - Iterations of ideas and market research
Lesson 5 - Presentation of final ideas and manufacture
Lesson 6 - Marketing and persuasive writing
Files included are: PowerPoint for delivery, Project Overview and a printable resource pack including complete step-by-step guide of the process.
Pupils will use basic hand tools to create a birdhouse that requires now fixtures or adhesive. This simple contemporary design means that pupils will be able to create and assemble there own birdhouse ready to take home. This resource includes the booklet that we have been using with our year 7 groups as well as the cutting files that we have used to produce the materials for pupils to cut using a coping saw. We recommend using 3mm Plywood but there is no reason that this wouldn’t work with 3mm MDF either. This booklet includes:
- Grade descriptors
- Flight path documents
- Baseline assessments for prior knowledge
- Design brief and specification worksheets
- Homework tasks
- Step by step instructions for build
- Tips on filing and cutting the material
- Design tasks
- Evaluation sheets
- Assessment sheets
We recommend 10 lessons to complete the project and the resources can be varied to suit your needs. I hope you find this helpful and as fun to teach as I do.
This project is designed to be taught over 10 lessons and will teach pupils how to create and print a keyring that is inspired by Pixel Art. This has been designed for year 7 pupils but could easily be adapted to suit other year groups. Included is:
a baseline test to assess prior knowledge to learning
a grade descriptor based on the project
worksheets that are based upon the design process
a step by step guide on how to make the product.
revision materials
end of unit test.
homework tasks
detailed evaluation pages
This booklet has been designed to look at the complete design cycle. starting from the design brief and moving onto the design specification. Research and product analysis allow pupils to look at existing products then the design process. We use Sketchup 8 but we have found that it works on all other versions of the CAD software.
This resources is prepared as part a need for a new design brief. Pupils explore world issues in order to understand what they need to learn so that they can design relevant products. A starter activity allows pupils to see how products progress and explore developments in design. The lesson then looks at the need for a new design in prosthetic limbs. Resources are supplied as well as golden rules of the classroom. This is aimed at YEAR 9 classes but would be easily adapted into a GCSE lesson
This is a lesson on the forces that act upon aeroplanes. Paper planes are designed and made in a design and make task that allows pupils to see how the different designs of a paper plane or aeroplane allow them to work differently. It shows the engineering considerations and how developments of products can alter how they work. This is designed as a stand alone lesson but may be part of a physics or engineering scheme of work to show the workings of forces and products. Attached are the golden rules that will help pupils achieve the best grades.
Track the progress of the pupils throughout their DT NEA task with this gantt chart and guidance booklet. The booklet is a guide through each stage of the marking criteria with a set of goals to help all pupils achieve at Key Stage 4. Using the AQA specification this booklet consists of a checklist for pupils, a break down of each Area of Assessment (AO) as well as a suggestion of sheets that will help your pupils illustrate their knowledge and understanding to the examiner.
I have printed this booklet off in previous years and it has been a tremendous help in the tracking of work and showing pupils exactly what they have to do. Having this at parents evenings has made it very straight forward in discussing what needs to be done and using intervention in collaboration with this booklet has been a great aid. I have added a teacher comment box for you to add comments that you want pupils to remember. You can see that deadlines have been set and this falls in line with the guided delivery time providing you have 1 hour lesson a week.
Keeping within the guidelines of the examination board there are only suggestions of evidence that could be used. There is also a very simple check box for teachers to tick off pupils work as it is completed and meets the criteria. This will reduce your work effort when it comes to the final marking and submitting of marks to the Examination board.

I have linked different templates for the making tasks so that pupils can focus on the aesthetics of the product and it’s suitability for their selected target audience. Pupils will gain a clearer understanding of the importance of using PPE during current times and how it can/cannot be effective. It is an opportunity for them to have a safer knowledge of how to remain safe.
All materials for the practical can be found around the house. They can trace/print the template that is embedded in the PDF or find their own! I have tried to make it as accessible as possible for those with or without computer access.
There is a clear time line that is explained to pupils throughout the project and the templated sheets help pupils stretch to their full potential. Look forward to seeing hundreds of variations of flu masks that will help pupils feel safer during this difficult time.
